Sample Letter to Legislators
Dear (Elected Official’s Name),
I am a constituent writing to encourage you to investigate the issue of statute of limitations reform for child sexual abuse. As a concerned citizen, it is my wish that our state eliminate or extend the statute of limitations for victims of child sexual abuse and open a window so that victims who are presently barred from brining a suit can have their day in court.
This reform serves a dual purpose. First, it allows victims to have their day in court which has been prevented by a woefully short statute of limitations. Second, it can potentially prevent future abuse by publicly exposing abusers who are currently unidentified. When California enacted legislation both extending the statute of limitations and opening a one-year window in 2003, it is estimated that over 300 previously undetected predators were publicly exposed. Delaware enacted a two-year window which expired on July 10, 2009. It is estimated that despite Delaware's small size, 60 unknown predators were identified.
It is time for our state to take this opportunity to protect our children. As sex crimes against children are especially heinous and the current statute of limitations acts as a shield to predators, we must act to protect our children by passing legislation to remedy this injustice. The law should be on the side of the children, not the abusers.
